Scoliosis Specific Physical Therapy

Scoliosis-specific physical therapy is a specialized approach designed to address the unique needs of individuals with scoliosis. Unlike general physical therapy, this type of treatment is tailored to manage the three-dimensional spinal deformities caused by scoliosis. The primary goals of scoliosis-specific physical therapy are to reduce pain, prevent further curvature progression, and improve overall function and quality of life. Therapy typically involves exercises that are specifically designed to target the asymmetrical nature of the scoliotic spine, helping to realign the body, strengthen supporting muscles, and improve postural awareness.

What to expect

During therapy, patients can expect a thorough evaluation to assess their spinal curvature, muscle imbalances, and overall posture. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan is created, often incorporating methods like the Schroth Method or SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis). These methods emphasize exercises that elongate the spine, derotate the rib cage, and improve muscle symmetry, all while focusing on controlled breathing techniques. The therapy sessions are highly interactive, with the therapist guiding patients through specific exercises designed to address their unique spinal curvature patterns.

A Holistic Approach

In addition to in-clinic exercises, scoliosis-specific physical therapy also involves education on incorporating corrective postures and movements into daily activities. Patients are taught how to adjust their body mechanics during activities of daily living (ADLs) to maintain spinal alignment and reduce strain. This holistic approach not only addresses the immediate symptoms but also empowers patients with the knowledge and skills to manage their condition long-term, promoting overall spinal stability and health.
